I have been conducting usability tests of software user interfaces for over 20 years, using a methodology based on what I learned in a graduate program in experimental cognitive psychology and adapted to an engineering environment. Typically it takes me between 3 and 4 weeks to complete a test. About half that time is spent planning the test, a quarter running it, and a quarter analyzing and interpreting results and generating recommendations.
