Taking a business-centric approach to portals
James Robertson writes about the pros and cons of portals before going on to explain how best to implement them. Here are some of his suggestions:
- Don't name your project a 'portal' project
- Don't let IT drive the project
- Identify business needs
- Carefully evaluate technology options
- Maximise flexibility
- Allocate funds to development
- Conduct usability testing
- Don't kill the intranet
- Reduce (don't increase) the number of systems
- Consider individual business unit needs
