Revised Category List
Revised Category ListI've revised the category listing on elearningpost -- found the last listing too narrow. Here's the new listing:
- Big Picture -- decision making, strategy, leadership, etc.
- Cool Stuff -- cool examples of interactives, websites, resources, etc.
- Education -- e-learning in schools and universities
- Information Design -- IA, usability, experience design, accessibility, etc.
- Knowledge Management -- Well, KM stuff
- Learning Design -- This might be controversial, but I find instructional design too narrow
- News -- facts and stories on the industry
- Standards -- learning standards related stuff

elearningpost: Interactive Visual Explainers — A Simple Classification
elearningpost: Interactive Visual Explainers — A Simple ClassificationWhile Peter J. Bogaards highlights the need for UX designers to learn from the field of Instructional Design, in this article I highlight the need for Instructional Designers to learn from the field of Visual Journalism. After years of linking to 'Interactives' and categorizing them under 'Realm of Cool', I decided to gather all of them and do a meta-level analysis to find patterns -- and I did. The Classification is a simple categorization of Interactives.
It's also important to highlight that this awareness -- that there could be patterns in my seemingly random linking -- seems to be a byproduct of keeping a blog for a long time!

Digital Web Magazine: The Information Design approach to Web development
Digital Web Magazine: The Information Design approach to Web development"Information Design is dedicated to making information as effective as possible. Effective is a carefully chosen word here. In order to be as effective as possible, information must carefully balance a variety of factors, including, but not limited to clarity, relevance, timeliness, amplitude, volume, and differentiation."
Information Architecture will come to play an important role in the design of effective e-learning too. Not so much in the full Flash-based variety, but the regular hybrid variety -- text in structured markup (XHTML or XML) mixed with useful learning additives (smart Flash usage--infographics or interactives) and served for online discussion.
Here are some examples of smart Flash learning additives:
