Replicating knowledge: principles or templates?
This paper written by Charles Baden-Fuller, Cass Business School, City University, London, explores the problem of knowledge transfer. "Templates" refer to the processes that are copied wholesale, while "principles" refers to the processes that are understood from the fundamentals. According to him, both methods have their strengths, although he leans towards principles. His paper explores these concepts in greater detail. Worth a read.
