IHT: THE END USER A Troubling Trend
The trend is clear. A few large Web sites have become very large, and the rest are small. In June, the Internet research firm Jupiter Media Metrix reported that half of all time online was spent at one of four Web sites. Two years earlier, it had taken 11 Web sites to account for half of the time online. Now, AOL Time Warner, Microsoft and Yahoo are by far the Big Three destinations on the Web. (Napster was the fourth, but it has been closed by the courts.) At the same time that this consolidation has been going on, the number of quality alternate destinations is shrinking. Feed and Suck, two well-regarded upstarts, went belly up this year. There are still small e-zines online, but many of them demonstrate the value of having gatekeepers who make choices.
