Get Out of Your Lab, and Into Their Lives

Peter Merholz's latest essay argues against relying solely on usability labs to help in understanding context. He suggests, and rightly so, that we ought to get out and do some field research.

I'll still stick with IDEO's four processes to understand users and their complex contexts:

  1. ASK them to help
  2. LOOK at what they do
  3. LEARN from the facts you gather
  4. TRY it yourself

More on IDEO's processes can be found on their Method Cards page.
