Forbes ASAP: Welcome to Feedback Universe
This is a very interesting article that talks about feedback loops in machines. It contrasts the two types of feedback loops--the 'negative' and the 'positive'. The negative feedback loops are the 'better' type and produce balance and stasis, for example, a thermostat. The positive feedback loops are the 'dangerous' type as they add up variations of each event and provide no sense of control, for example, drug-addiction. Interestingly it is the positive feedback loops that are at the core of change... "change--in the form of learning, interacting, and organizing, the kinds of activity we often think of as social--is the province of positive feedback." The question therefore is, How to embed bits of 'positive' in a seemingly 'negative' seeking world?
