First Impressions Last

Gerry McGovern wrote an article in Oct 05 titled Graphic design plays a minor role on the Web. In that he claimed that

Your website must be useful. It must be fast and convenient, with a navigation that is familiar and simple. The Web is not a brochure, an annual report, or a TV ad. It’s the Web.

Now we have this report from Canadian researchers that claim that

[V]isual appeal (of a website) can be assessed within 50 milliseconds, which means that web designers have only 50 milliseconds to create an impact on users. Significantly, the research proved that the age-old maxim about first impressions still very much holds good.

I guess that this means that graphic design is useful to a large degree in creating first impressions, essential to any business that wants to be in business. And then graphic design helps sustaining the brand of the website, again essential to any business that wishes to care about their brand. So in my opinion, of course usabilitiy is important, but I feel that graphic design is too.
