e-learning Magazine: No More Digital Page-Turning
Elliott Masie: Whenever there is a new technology, early usage is often modeled after something that is familiar. Right now, we see many of the classroom or textbook metaphors shining through. About 98 percent of the e-learning content that is now offered to adult, corporate learners, is modeled after a textbook or classroom metaphor. The textbook “form factor” leads to extensive collections of text-based information that is viewable or searchable by a reader... I am waiting to see newer and more provocative design models emerge for e-learning—models that combine classic instructional design principles with the engagement components of gaming and e-commerce. And models that recognize the unique relationship of learner/keyboard/monitor and a learning process that is much more latitudinal in nature.
