David Weinberger: Dead Trees and CommittmentThis is the most fundamental part of the publishing model that the Web hasn't changed: books are published when they're done. But, as books increasingly become electronic — which will happen practically all at once when the first mass market, usable e-book device is released — that part of the publishing model will fall also. Authors will of course correct errors after the book has been released, but they'll also revise and expand the book as often as they want to. A set of conventions will emerge that will let the book become a long conversation with engaged readers. That's what many books have always wanted to become.
