CIO: Designing World Class E-learning
Most companies' learning systems are bankrupt. The way managers attempt to help their people acquire skills and knowledge has absolutely nothing to do with the way people actually learn. Many trainers rely on lectures and tests, memorization and manuals. All too often, they train people just like the schools teach students: Both rely on “telling.” No one remembers much that's taught by telling, and what's told doesn't translate into usable skills. As this book will make clear, we learn by doing, failing, and practicing until we do it right. Because most organizations can't afford massive on-the-job failure and most people don't learn when they fail in public, we need to create a safe place to fail and learn. The virtual reality of computer simulations and role-playing scenarios serve that purpose.
